Privatization of Security Can Derail US-Led Stabilization of Afghanistan

"Privatization of Security Can Derail US-Led Stabilization of Afghanistan"
by: M. Ashraf Haidari, AISS Research Fellow and Vasabjit Banerjee
The Diplomat Magazine

The Trump administration has recently been encouraged to consider a plan using private military companies (PMC) to maintain security in Afghanistan. According to Blackwater founder Erik Prince, the plan’s primary external supporter, such a force would include 5,500 personnel and a 90-plane ready-to-use air force. Aside from saving American soldiers’ lives, it would cost the U.S. treasury $10 billion per year instead of the current $40 billion. In terms of command structure and composition, the personnel would be embedded within existing Afghan security forces as advisors and the air-force would drop bombs when directed by the Afghan government.

"Kabul praises Donald Trump's 'fight-to-win' Afghanistan strategy"

Afghan authorities welcome promise of increased troop numbers, but Pakistan security officials accuse president of blaming Islamabad for US failures
Donald Trump’s new strategy for the war in Afghanistan has been praised by Afghan government officials for increasing troop numbers, doing away with strict timelines and for upping pressure on Pakistan, which Kabul sees as a main sponsor of the insurgency.
But Pakistani security officials have accused the US president of shifting blame for its failures in the war against the Taliban and other armed groups in Afghanistan, and of endangering the already fraught bilateral relations between Washington and Islamabad. click for more

"Afghans greet Trump’s announcement with relief, concerns"

KABUL — Relieved Afghan officials instantly welcomed President Trump’s strategy announcement Tuesday, citing his assurance of broad U.S. military, economic and political support despite a lack of specific pledges, and praising his tough stance on Pakistan, which he denounced for offering safe haven to “terrorists” and “agents of chaos.”
Shortly after Trump’s speech, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani described himself as “grateful to President Trump and the American people for this affirmation of support for our efforts to achieve self reliance.”
The Afghan ambassador in Washington described the speech as “the first time a focus has been put on what Afghanistan must have to succeed,” and a sign of strong commitment to “our shared goals.” click for more

Iran, Afghanistan, India: Chabahar plays key role in trade ties

Participants at a tripartite meeting of Iranian, Afghan and Indian officials underlined the importance of Iran's Chabahar port for broadening of trade relations.

The meeting was attended by Head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry's Educational and International Research Center Mohammad Kazem Sajjadpour, Head of Afghan Strategic Studies Center Davood Moradian and Head of the Indian Defense Ministry's Defense Studies Center Jayant Prasad, Fars News Agency reportedclick for more Iran Daily

What would happen if the United States totally disengaged from Afghanistan?

Davood Moradian, director of the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies

Disengagement would result in the partition of the country into regions akin to “Somalia” and “Somaliland.” The Pashtun heartland will resemble the former and the central, northern and western regions the latter. In this scenario, Pakistan revives its strategic depth by creating a “Grand Waziristan,” comprising of Pashtun-dominated border regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Russia will consolidate its reign over Central Asian states. Should Afghan and regional players fail to manage this scenario, then the Pashtun heartland will revert to an Islamist, Sunni, Pashtun caliphate where attacks on the West could be launched.Click for more

Behind the front lines in the fight to ‘annihilate’ ISIS in Afghanistan

“In Nangahar, it is Pakistan’s game,” said Davood Moradian, director of the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies, referring to the province in which Achin is located. Pakistan has launched its own military operation against Islamist militants on its side of the Spin Ghar range, but Moradian was skeptical that they shared the goal of the group’s elimination.click for more

Afghanistan-Central Asia Dialogue calls for building mutual trust

KABUL -- The fourth round of the Afghanistan-Central Asia Dialogue wrapped up last week in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, revealing that regional and international peace might more easily be found by getting to know neighbours than by fearing them.

The conference, organised by the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS), took place July 14-15.

Representatives from at least 10 countries and international bodies -- including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, India and Pakistan -- discussed the "Nexus of Geo-Politics and Terrorism".

Afghanistan's neighbours, particularly those from Central Asia, fear Afghanistan because of inadequate familiarity with Afghan issues, said AISS Director Daoud Moradian.
